Frequently Asked Questions

Specialty Care Services hires the most qualified health care professionals in the Washington region. Our caregivers undergo rigorous screenings, in addition to being fully licensed and bonded.

Our selection requirements include:

  • Two or more years of experience in health care, with at least one year in a nursing home or hospital
  • CPR certification
  • PPD testing (TB testing)
  • Criminal background check
  • Physical examination
  • Two or more positive references
  • Professional licensing

We customize our services to each individual patient. First, we gather details about their condition(s), special needs, and personal preferences. Using that information, our Director of Nursing performs an analysis to build an individualized health care plan. She then chooses 2-3 candidates that are best suited for that particular patient. Finally, the patient and their family interviews each candidate and decides which one is best suited for their situation

Caregivers are matched with patients based on their skill sets, personalities, and professional experience. They thoroughly review each new patient’s client information profile, so that any questions can be addressed before they begin service. They also meet with new patients before beginning their assignments.

Transitions are never easy

Transitions are never easy, and the desire to age in place or move in with one’s children has become an increasing trend. In the case of Ms. Viola Livingston, the stress accompanying her return home from the hospital was eased by a local home health care company.

While living with her daughter, Sharon Livingston, in her home in Mitchellville, Md., Viola had been admitted to the hospital for rehabilitative services in July. When it was time for her to be discharged, it became quite evident that additional care would be needed at home. It was very important to Viola and her daughter that her departure from the hospital be as effortless and comfortable as possible, especially since Sharon was working full-time.

For the Livingston’s, the choice for a home care provider was obvious given that they were extremely happy with the level of service, care and personalized attention that Viola received during her hospital stay from caregivers with Specialty Care Services.

Executive Director Al Simons worked with Viola and Sharon to ensure a seamless transition in care and to see that some of the same staff from the hospital accompanied Viola to her home.

Since August, the caregivers have not only assisted Viola with the activities of daily living, including bathing and dressing, but they have also attended medical appointments with her.

The Livingston’s cannot speak highly enough of the caregivers with whom they have developed a strong bond. According to Viola, she has bonded especially with Hawa Coulibaly who she has long talks with ranging from their favorite television shows to current political events.

Sharon said she has noticed a difference in her mother’s mood as she looks forward to Hawa’s company and being able to share her thoughts, feelings and opinions with someone.

“She really cherishes the relationship she has been able to establish,” said Sharon.

And this in turn has made all the difference for Viola’s busy daughter, who can now rest assured knowing that following a smooth transition by Specialty Care Services, her mother is being taken care of and has found new friends in the process. For these reasons, the Livingston’s found their home health care provider to not only be the obvious, but also the right choice.

Live-in Nursing Care

On short notice, Adwoa Wilson was assigned to provide live in nursing assistant care for my father during the final year of his life. It was a difficult assignment as my father had limited mobility and significant health issues. Adwoa provided this live-in, nursing assistant care in-home on a 24/7 basis.

Ms. Wilson demonstrated in short order that she could assume full and competent responsibility for daily patient planning needs including overseeing the administration of medications, ensuring meals were prepared and scheduled appropriately, and undertaking bathing and hygiene and all other activities of daily living requirements. She cheerfully and ably assumed all her home care nursing duties and as a self-starter consistently sought to seek more ways to improve upon the physical environment to provide greater home care for her patient.

Ms. Wilson is an extraordinary individual and my family was fortunate to have such a person of high performance standards and we appreciate her willingness to extend herself to not only support my father’s needs but for those of the entire family. She is a person who exudes personal integrity and who really cares for the patient in her care. She is an outstanding nurse who is a treasure for those fortunate enough to have her as their caregiver. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Specialty Care Services and their staff and I am confident that they will be an important and contributing member of any household with similar nursing care needs. I assure you that Ms. Wilson will be greatly missed by my family.
